EPS is a lightweight, easy to handle, rigid thermal insulation. Its closed cell structure assures long-lasting thermal insulation properties and water-resistance. In addition, EPS insulation will not support the growth of bacteria or decay over time. It is available in several compressive strengths to withstand load and backfill forces. Type I EPS material works very well in foundation applications.
EPS in Foundations Pass the Tests
Two different and completely independent studies were conducted recently in Canada and found that EPS as exterior basement insulation is extremely durable.
In the first test, after two complete freeze-thaw cycles, the insulation showed no degradation of its physical and thermal properties. The test results were especially impressive in view of the fact that the soil around the basement had heavy clay content, which retains moisture.
A different Canadian research project more extensively evaluated the durability performance of EPS insulation in an exterior below-grade application. In this study, EPS insulation, thermal performance, site weather conditions and soil moisture content were instrumented and monitored throughout the project over a 30-month exposure period using thermal couples attached to EPS insulation and the concrete wall.
The monitoring of thermal performance detected the presence of water at the outer surface of the EPS foam during periods of heavy rain and major thaws; however, the surface of the concrete basement wall showed no evidence of water penetration through most of the height of the wall.
